Words to Know

A Shabbat Table · Grades K–2
Shabbat
shah-BAHT
The Jewish day of rest, every week. It begins on Friday evening at sundown and lasts until Saturday night. It is a time to rest and be with family.
Candles
two candles
Two candles are lit on Friday evening to welcome Shabbat — often the first thing a family does to begin the day of rest. The pair is traditionally said to stand for two ways of marking the day: remembering it and keeping it.
Challah
HAH-lah
A soft, braided bread eaten on Shabbat. Families often place two loaves on the table; tradition connects the pair to a story of a double portion of food gathered before the day of rest.
Rest
the big idea
The whole point of Shabbat: stopping work for one day each week to rest, slow down, and spend time with the people you love.
